When you see this seemingly crazy behavior in the markets and hear this strange language of shorts, halts, and hedge funds, it might not make sense to those who should be long term investors.  In fact, when we see this happen, I often hear and get asked: Is the market rigged?  Is it a casino?  Should I be getting into this?

No I do not believe the stock market is rigged or a casino.  These occurrences are more like a sideshow to the real event.  Think of it as a game of three card monte played outside in the back alley. Don't play.

Its like visiting New York, you have reservations booked to have dinner and see a Broadway show.  On the way to dinner a street hustler tries to draw you into a game of three card monte (which you can’t win).  The dinner and show is the real stock market.  The hustler is the sideshow.   My advice is walk past the hustle and enjoy a nice dinner and show.

Or for sports fans you are going to a game.  The market is the sports game.  You don’t know if you are going to win or lose that day but over the long run your team will have some winning seasons (even if you’re a Cleveland Browns fan).  Again, walk past the hustle and enjoy the game.
